School Retirees Remembered

During the month of May, members of the Carbon County Chapter of the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees (PASR) are conducting various activities throughout the county for its members. The Social Service Committee is coordinating visitation plans to each of the members who are homebound, in hospitals, nursing homes or rehabilitation centers. Each of those members will receive a gift Bag of Cheer, prepared by the Social Service committee as an appreciation of their years of service to our youth. Members will be making arrangements to transport our elderly members to appointments, meetings, luncheons or visitation of other members. Plans are being formulated to help that special person “the caregiver spouse” with assistance in caring for their charge.

Carbon County Career & Technical Institute volunteered to assist our members through the Cosmetology and Culinary Arts programs

Carbon PASR nonagenarians were “treated to lunch in the Dining Room and then enjoy the special pampering by Cosmetology students.”

Perhaps, you will help us by remembering a former school employee with a card, telephone call or a special visit.   It will mean a lot to them to know that they are not forgotten.

Community Service Committee will be lending a hand to the Social Service Committee by distributing Health Record Keepers to our members during May, the Month of Caring. Supplementary to the Health Record Keeper, is the” Vial of Life” container which should be used to keep a copy of your medications and an update of your medical history.  The Vial should be kept on the top shelf of your refrigerator, a “Vial of Life” magnet is placed on your refrigerator door to alert EMT of your medical history in case of an emergency. Extra Vials are available for other PASR members, family or friends.

The Carbon PASR Social Committee raised money to help offset the cost of the activities planned for the month of caring by requesting a Wal-mart grant and having a used book sale. Pictures below include: Marjorie Balliet, Social Service Chair accepting a Wal-mart check; SScommittee sorting and packing books for the book sale; filling the gift bags of cheer for distribution; Carbon PASR members being served lunch at the Carbon County Career & Technical Institute dining room; and Carbon PASR members being pampered by the CCC&TI Cosmetology students.

Visitations made by Carbon PASR Members

One of the 20 special visitations made to members of the Carbon PASR (Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees) who are in hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers and homebound was made to Carbon PASR member, Ethel Sweitzer who is a resident of the Saucon Valley Manor in Hellertown.  Ethel is pictured with a vase of flowers and a gift "bag of cheer" which was filled by the Carbon PASR Social Service Committee with many goodies.

Ethel Sweitzer was a fourth grade teacher at the Delaware Elementary School in Palmerton.  Ethel was active in many clubs in the Palmerton area and was an active member of the Palmerton Hospital Auxiliary. Ethel performed many hours of volunteer work in the Palmerton Hospital and the "Nearly New Shop" run by the auxiliary.
